Terms of Service

Last updated: October 12, 2026

Welcome to Marginalia (the "Service"). The Service is provided by Jason Wang ("we", "us"), who can be reached at [email protected]. By using the Service you agree to these Terms, our Privacy Policy and our Refund Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service.

1. The Service

Marginalia is an AI text humanizer. You paste English text you already have; we first rewrite it into Chinese and then translate it back into English sentence by sentence, so it reads more naturally.

  • The Service accepts English text only, up to 8,000 English words at a time.
  • Rewrites are produced by a third-party large language model. A rewrite aims to keep the facts, numbers, citations and structure of the original, but it can change subtle tone, certainty or who-did-what. The fidelity hints on the page are an aid to checking, not a guarantee that every change is found. Read and check the result yourself before you submit or publish it.
  • We don't promise that rewrites will pass any AI content detector, and we aren't responsible for detection scores.
  • We may change the Service's features, the model we use and our providers, to improve quality or manage costs.

2. Accounts

  • You sign in with a code sent to your email or with your Google account. Your account is created the first time you sign in.
  • You must be at least 16 years old, or older if the law where you live requires it. If you are under that age, you may use the Service only with the consent and supervision of a parent or guardian.
  • Each person may have only one account. Your account is for you alone; you may not lend, transfer or sell it.
  • Keep your email and Google account secure. Actions taken through your account are treated as yours.

3. Words, prices and payment

  • How you're charged: each rewrite deducts the number of English words in your original text from your word balance. Words are counted the way the page shows them (each English word and each number counts as one). The page shows how many words a rewrite will use before you start it.
  • Automatic refunds of words: if a rewrite fails, you cancel it, it times out or it doesn't finish because of a service interruption, the words it used are returned automatically.
  • Word packs: you get words by buying one-time word packs, priced in US dollars as shown on the purchase page. There are no subscriptions and nothing renews automatically.
  • Who sells to you: word packs are sold and collected by Creem as the merchant of record. Payments, taxes, receipts, refunds and chargebacks are handled through Creem, and Creem's buyer terms also apply to your purchase. We never see your card details.
  • Taxes: Creem may add VAT or sales tax at checkout depending on where you are.
  • Validity: purchased words don't expire for as long as your account exists.
  • Nature of words: words can only be used on the Service. They have no cash value and can't be withdrawn, transferred or exchanged for anything else.
  • Gifts: a new account receives a one-time gift of words (currently 2,000), once per person. If we find gifts claimed repeatedly through multiple accounts, throwaway email addresses or other means, we may take the gifted words back and suspend the accounts involved. We may also give words from time to time as compensation or as part of a promotion. Gifted words have no cash value either.
  • Price changes: we may change pack prices or sizes. Changes apply only to later purchases and don't affect words you already have.

4. Your content

  • You keep whatever rights you have in the text you submit and in the rewrites you receive. We claim no ownership.
  • To provide the Service, you allow us to send your text to our model provider to produce the rewrite and return it to you. We don't store your text or the rewrites, and we don't use them to train models. See the Privacy Policy for details.
  • You confirm that you have the rights needed to submit your text, and that it doesn't break the law or infringe anyone else's rights.

5. Acceptable use

When using the Service, you must not:

  1. submit unlawful content, or content that infringes others' copyright, trademarks, privacy or other rights;
  2. use the Service for fraud, impersonation, spreading false information or any other unlawful activity;
  3. break the rules of your school, publisher, employer or platform on using and disclosing AI, or pass off rewritten text as independent work produced without AI in order to commit academic misconduct or breach other integrity rules (it is your responsibility to know and follow those rules);
  4. call, scrape or load-test the Service in bulk by automated means, or get around rate limits, human verification or charging;
  5. reverse-engineer the Service, or try to access other people's accounts or data;
  6. create multiple accounts to claim gifts, or otherwise abuse gifts, refunds or compensation.

If you break these rules, we may, depending on the seriousness, refuse service, take back words obtained improperly, and suspend or close your account. If we close an account for breaking these rules, purchased words that haven't been used are not refunded, unless the law requires otherwise.

6. Intellectual property

The Service's software, design, text and marks belong to us. Apart from using the Service as these Terms allow, you may not copy, modify or distribute them or build derivative products from them.

7. Disclaimer

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no promises, express or implied, that the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free, that rewrites will be accurate, complete or fit for a particular purpose, or that they will pass any detector. Rewrites can contain mistakes; you are responsible for judging them and for how you use them.

8. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, our total liability for any loss arising from or relating to the Service is limited to the amount you actually paid for the Service in the 12 months before the claim. We are not liable for indirect losses, lost profits, lost data or loss of goodwill.

Nothing in this section excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited by law, or affects any mandatory rights you have as a consumer under the law where you live.

9. Ending your use

  • You can delete your account at any time on the account page. Deleting it removes your account, your remaining words and your activity, and can't be undone. If you want a refund for purchased words, ask for it under the Refund Policy before you delete your account.
  • If we suspend or close your account because you broke these Terms, section 5 applies.
  • If we decide to stop running the Service, we will give at least 30 days' notice and refund, under the Refund Policy, the purchased words you haven't used.

10. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms. We'll announce material changes on the site or by email before they take effect. If you keep using the Service after the changes take effect, you accept the updated Terms. If you don't accept them, you can stop using the Service and delete your account.

11. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the place where the operator is established. If a dispute arises, we will first try to resolve it with you in good faith; if that fails, either side may bring it before a court with jurisdiction. If you are a consumer, nothing in these Terms takes away the mandatory protection the law where you live gives you.

12. Contact

For any questions about these Terms, email [email protected].
